Abstract

Background. In the recent decades the incidence of malignant melanoma has been rising. In dermatological practice at the General hospital in Slovenj Gradec three cases of malignant melanoma were diagnosted in 1983, but in the year 2000 we had ten patients with the same disease.

Methods and results. During 17 years I treated 81 patients with malignant melanoma, 46 of them were females, 35 males. In my research I conducted retrospective analysis according to sex, age, duration of the disease before visiting dermatologist, melanoma site, size (at first visit), histological type of growth, invasion and thickness of melanoma. In 1991 I started dermatoscopy. The youngest patient was 17, the oldest 89 years old. The most threatened group considering age is between 50–59 years. The average time before visiting a dermatologist totals to 17.3 months for males and 20.8 months for females. The most common melanoma site in male is on the body (68.57%) and in females on lower extremities (45.65%). Superficial spreading melanoma (39.2%) and nodular type (36.49%) are the most frequent types of growth. Considering the depth of invasion Clark 4 (37.83%) predominates, regarding the thickness of the tumor (Breslow) the group between 1.51–4 mm (40.54%) prevails.

Conclusions. Results of the research on malignant melanoma in dermatological practice at the General hospital in Slovenj Gradec are comparable with epidemiological characteristics in Slovenia, some statements could also be compared with findings in foreign studies.
