Chitosan and its possible use in medicine

  • Andreja Erman

Abstract

Background: Searching for new drug formulations, which enable drug targeting to specific tissues and cells, is in full swing. Various investigations of polymers including chitosan indicate a wide applicability in the pharmaceutical field and consequently also in medicine due to its established physicochemical properties. Chitosan is a natural polymer obtained by deacetylation of chitin. Cationic nature and conformation permit chitosan to react with anionic drugs and to be a promising bioadhesive material. All this gives chitosan a potential to be a controlled delivery system for drug targeting .
