THE DIAGNOSIS OF THE PRIMARY CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM LYMPHOMA
Abstract
Background. Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is an uncommon tumour that arises within and is confined to the central nervous system. The incidence of PCNSL is increasing among immunocompromised patients as well as among normal older population. Clinical features and changes of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are non-specific. The diagnosis of PCNSL is based primarily on neuroimaging, biopsy and histopathology.
Conclusions. In our article we present three patients with PCNSL in whom the correct diagnosis was established only post mortem. We also present a patient in whom we suspected PCNSL based on clinical features and CSF changes. However the biopsy reveiled a glioblastoma.
