Lymphoepithelioma – like carcinoma of the ureter – a case report
Abstract
Background: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma is a malignant tumor with identical morphological characteristics to lymphoepithelioma of the nasopharynx, occuring also in other organs. Histologically, it is an undifferentiated carcinoma with prominent lymphoid infiltrate in the stroma. A case report of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the ureter in a 71-year-old female is presented. To our knowledge, it is the fourth case of this tumor reported to date.
Conclusions: The reported case of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the ureter is histologically and immunohistochemically analogous to the lymphoepithelioma of the nasopharynx. The patient was treated by left-sided nephrouretectomy. Later she developed an urothelial papillary carcinoma of the bladder, which was removed by transurethral resection. Regrettably, she died three years later of inoperable pancreatic carcinoma with pulmonary metastases.
