Abstract

Background. Trigger digits can be treated surgically using an open or percutaneous technique. Although the latter has been known for almost fifty years a renewed interest has emerged in the last decade when it proved to be equal to open technique. Twenty four patients were treated by percutaneous release under local anethesia using a 21 gauge needle in the last year with the mimimum follow up of two months. One patient was lost to follow up. Of the remaining 23 patients with 24 trigger digits 19 (82.6%) had complete relief of their symptoms. Twenty digits (83.3%) were successfuly released. In four digits (16.7%) the symptoms recurred. There were no lesions of important anatomic structures.

Conclusions. Percutaneous trigger finger release is simple, reliable and cheap. The learning curve is steep.
