  • Aleš Kogoj

Abstract

Background: Slovenia is amongst countries with the highest suicide rate, which is increasing in old age. Suicide risk factors in old age are similar to those in other life periods, but with different impact. Mental disorders, personality traits, physical illnesses and life circumstances are factors associated with suicide. By far the most important suicide risk in old age is depression. Conclusions: Recognizing depression, especially in general practice, is important for successfully treating and consequently reducing suicide risk in old age.
