TREATMENT OF HEROIN ADDICTION WITH METHADONE IN THE CENTREFOR PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF ADDICTION OF ILLICIT DRUGSLOGATEC
Abstract
BACKGROUND The attitude of lay and medical public towards methadone treatment still stays charged byprejudices because of the lack of knowledge and misunderstanding of such treatment. Thepurpose of the research was the presentation of patients that were treated by methadone inthe center at the end of 10-year anniversary. The aim of this presentation is to broaden theprofessional knowledge about the use of methadone and comprehension and acceptanceof the patients treated this way. METHODS The research included all 78 patients treated with methadone. Questionnaires, qualitativeapproaches and medical evidences were used. RESULTS Before starting methadone treatment the detoxification without medical help was accomplished by 37 % of them, 15 % were hospitalised in psychiatric clinics for the purpose ofdetoxification, 6 % were treated in the therapeutic communities, 3.9 % in the Project »Človek«. 11 % of the patients spent a part of their youth in the schools of correction. 13 % wereconnected with inprisonment. 79 % were working or/and schooling. They had children in30.8 % and they had a partner in the treatment with methadone in 23 % CONCLUSIONS The results of the research give the possibilities for better understanding and improvedacceptance of the patients, treated because of heroin addiction by methadoneDownloads
