Abstract

The cancer burden is estimated by epidemiological indicators such as incidence, mortality, prevalence and survival. For Slovenian population cancer burden indices are collected by the Cancer Registry of Slovenia and the Institute of Public Health; the indices are also available on the SLORA web portal. On average, in recent years, there were closely to 12,000 Slovenes diagnosed with cancer annually, a little over 5,500 persons died of cancer and there were more than 70,000 persons alive ever diagnosed with at least one cancer. Five-year relative survival of Slovenian patients is increasing with time; it has already exceeded 50 percent. In comparison with other European Union countries, the Slovenian cancer incidence is on average, but unfortunately we must conclude that both, cancer mortality and survival rates in our country are below average. Cancer burden control can be implemented only by clear objectives, well-designed and financially supported measures and their ongoing quality and impact monitoring.
