Abstract

Backrgound Fulminant hepatitis with acute hepatic failure caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation is rare and has high mortality. We report a case of fulminant EBV hepatitis withacute hepatic failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation and multiorgan failure inchronic lymphocytic leukaemia patient in relaps treated with alemtuzumab (monoclonalantiCD52) and standard chemoprophylaxis. After transient neutropenia he becameicteric and had upper abdominal pain. The course was progressive and he died 13 daysafter onset of symptoms. We confirmed serologically and moleculary (EBV-DNA PCR)reactivation of EBV.
