Abstract

Introduction: To assess visual function of the eyes with corneal astigmatism higher than 1D after cataract surgery and implantation of a singlepiece plate-haptic toric hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens with hydrophobic surface six months postoperatively. Methods: Patients with cataracts and corneal astigmatism higher than 1D were included into this prospective study. Predictive axis of IOL was marked on the cornea, standard phacoemulsification cataract surgery was performed and single-piece toric hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens with hydrophobic surface was implanted into the lens capsule. Corneal astigmatism was measured pre- and postoperatively. Best-uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity and change in axis orientation of astigmatism were measured postoperatively. Results: 34 eyes of 26 patients were included into this study. Mean best distance-uncorrected visual acuity in logMAR was 0.07 (SD:0.11), mean best distance-corrected visual acuity was -0.01 (SD:0.06), mean astigmatism of the eyes was 0.47 D (SD:0.35). Mean corneal astigmatism pre and postoperatively, was 2.50 D (SD:1.60) and 2.47 D (SD:1.60), respectively. The astigmatism axis of the eyes has changed on average 3.6° (SD:3.3°). Conclusion: Patients with medium to high corneal astigmatism and implanted single-piece toric hydrophilic acrylic IOLs with hydrophobic surface have very good visual function six months postoperatively.
