Abstract

Background: Amblyopia mens weaker visual acuity of one or both eyes and is not due to an organic leason. It usually develops in early childhood, patients 8 years or older with a normal visual system have low probability of developing amblyopia. There is a risk of reappearing amblyopia even after it had been treated till the age of 9 or 10. The most frequent reason for developing amblyopia are strabismus, amethropia and anisomethropia.

Conclusions: The treatment of amblyopia is removal of the source, prescription of suitable correction of refractive error, occlusion of the healthier eye, pleoptic exercises and surgical treatment if necessary. Early identification of amblyopia is important for a good treatment outcome.
